Evidence-Based Benefits of Acupuncture After Surgery
- Reduces post-operative pain
Multiple systematic reviews show acupuncture can significantly decrease pain after surgery, especially in the first 24 hours post-op. - May reduce reliance on pain medications (including opioids)
Studies have found patients receiving acupuncture used fewer opioid medications after surgery compared to standard care alone. - Supports improved mobility and function during recovery
Research in post-surgical patients (e.g., orthopedic procedures) shows improved range of motion and functional outcomes when acupuncture is added to rehab. - Helps decrease inflammation and swelling
Clinical findings suggest acupuncture can support the body’s inflammatory response, contributing to reduced swelling and improved healing conditions. - May lower risk of certain post-surgical complications
Some studies report a reduced incidence of complications when acupuncture is used alongside standard recovery care. - Supports faster return of normal bodily function
Acupuncture has been shown to help with issues like post-operative ileus (digestive slowdown after surgery), supporting faster recovery of normal function. - Enhances early-stage recovery outcomes
Evidence suggests acupuncture can improve pain and mobility in the early recovery phase (first 1–2 weeks), which is critical for long-term outcomes. - Works well as an integrative modality
Research consistently positions acupuncture as an effective integration with western medical care—a way to enhance overall recovery.

In-Home Acupuncture Care FAQS
How soon after surgery can I have treatment?
Acupuncture can be administered immediately after surgery. Needles are avoided at local surgical site for the first eight days but are placed in other locations to begin facilitating healing. After the initial eight days, scar treatments may begin but depend on personalized needs to be determined by Dr. Livesay Thayakaran. Treatments are always adapted to your specific needs and stage of healing.
What happens during a session?
Each visit includes a personalized assessment and treatment based on how you’re feeling that day. In addition to acupuncture, sessions may incorporate supportive techniques such as electrostimulation (e-stim), cupping, tui na or other modalities when appropriate to enhance your results.
Do you come to my home?
Yes. This is a fully in-home service. Treatments are provided in the comfort of your space, which is especially helpful when mobility is limited or travel is difficult after surgery.
How long are sessions?
Initial visits are typically longer (around 75–90 minutes) to allow for a thorough intake and treatment. Follow-up sessions are usually around 60 minutes.
Should I be seen prior to my surgery?
Yes, an initial consultation is highly recommended prior to your surgery. This allows us to establish a personalized care plan in advance and ensure your post-operative recovery is properly supported from the start.
Scheduling ahead of time is especially helpful because it is often more difficult to arrange appointments and coordinate treatment immediately after surgery due to recovery limitations and scheduling constraints. By meeting beforehand, we can plan appropriate timing for care, discuss your procedure, and ensure a smoother, more efficient recovery process once surgery is complete.
However, a pre-surgical consultation is not required—you may still begin care after your procedure.
Do you accept insurance?
In-home services are private pay. If applicable, you may be able to use out-of-network benefits or HSA/FSA funds. A superbill can be provided upon request.
